SUMMARY
Description of sound recordings begins with technical reading of the discs and containers in order to gain a clear understanding of the commercial aspects of the recording as well as its musical content. Title and publication data that appear in the description usually are transcribed from the disc itself, which is the preferred source of information.
It is important to understand the difference between copyright dates that appear in regard to text and artwork, and phonogram copyright dates that appear in regard to the actual recorded sound. Dates of publication are almost never available on sound recordings and must nearly always be inferred from the copyright and release dates. In AACR2 only phonogram copyright dates were transcribed, and these only in the absence of dates of publication. In RDA a date of publication is required, and any dates of copyright that apply to the entire resource are transcribed as well. The difference is between the presumption in AACR2 that it was the sound being cataloged, but in RDA the presumption is that we are describing the resource in its entirety.
Describing the carrier is relatively rote.
Extensive notes usually are called for. Notes on the work identify the music performed. Notes on the expression identify the performance by naming creative artists, forms of composition, and data on the capture of the performance. Notes on the manifestation identify sources such as libretti, song texts and program notes that are present in or on containers and are peculiar to specific manifestations. The label name and number also are transcribed to identify the specific manifestation.
Detailed contents notes are common for sound recordings, because they almost always include more than one work that must be identified specifically. These notes often include detailed statements of responsibility and durations of performance.
